The Middle School Child
The pre-adolescent period is a distinct and crucial period of individual develpment. For a school to meet the needs of this age group, it must have certain features. These features, which are emphasized at Nipher, will help students
* make progress toward becoming independent persons.
* learn to work with others.
* organize their knowledge of the world.
At Nipher Middle School, we provide opportunities for all students by enabling them to:
* manage the organizational responsibilities of an educational setting (use lockers, follow a schedule, keep track of work in assignment books, homework, etc.)
* Improve basic reading, writing, and computational skills.
* explore a wide variety of subjects i.e., foreign languages, music, industrial technology, health, art, and other areas of personal interest.
* participate in a noncompetitive physical education program designed to promote physical finess and develop personal skills.
* work with a variety of individuals and groups in order to foser growth in responsibility and interpersonal skills.
Basic Skills
Our basic skills program is the foundation of our school curriculum. The basic skills area of the curriculum includes language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, and reading. All students participate in this program. Emphasis is placed on the development of concepts and skills. Basic skills teachers (team teachers) meet daily in team planning sessions and can use this time to conference with individual students and parents.
Explo & Wellness Programs
Explo subjects provide an opportunity for students to investigate a variety of activities in the modern languages, practical arts and aesthetic arts. The sequence involves experiences in these areas with the eventual opportunity for some student selection of electives. The Wellness program is a combined curricular offering of health and physical education.
