Africa
One of the units we study in sixth grade social studies is Africa. Below
you will find a list of the curriculum and objectives for this unit.
- Understanding the role of rivers in the development of African civilizations.
- Locate the Nile. Niger, Congo, and Zambezi rivers on a map of Africa and
descirbe their realtive locations.
- Apply understandings of the roles of rivers to the rivers in Africa.
- Collect and organize information on the civilizations of Africa and the roles
of the rivers in their development.
- Understand the economic challenges presented dur to Africa's diverse
physiographic features.
- Locate the physical features of Africa, including the Sahara, Kalahan, Namib,
Ethiopian, Highlans, Atlas Mountains, Congo Basin, Great Rift Valley, Serengeti Plain,
and the Sahel.
- Explain the relationship between Africa's physical features and issues facing
African nations including possible solutions.
- Understand colonialism's impact on the culture of Africa.
- Identify the main reasons for interactions between Africa and surrounding regions
and explain the impact of those interactions.
- Compare and contrast life in Africa before and after the European colonization
of Africa.
- Understand Africa's ethnic diversity.
- Identify the four regions of Africa.
- Classify aspects of Africa's ethnic, diversity based on architecture, clothing,
economics, religion, and technology.
